NCEA Level 3 Media Studies
Course Description
Head of Faculty - Kaihautuu: Mr B. Silk.
In today's digital age, media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, disseminating information, and influencing society. Media Studies fosters creativity and expression. Students learn to create and manipulate various media forms, such as video, audio, graphics, and written content. These skills allow them to communicate ideas effectively and engage with audiences using different media platforms. Media Studies equips students with valuable technological skills as media production becomes increasingly digital. Using editing software, digital cameras, audio equipment, and online platforms prepares them for a world where digital literacy is essential for many careers.
Students will write a short film script, ensuring that it meets the format of proper script writing conventions and proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This Film Script must also be an interesting, layered narrative that is engaging to read. Students will plan and then produce a media product, at this level, it is an 8 to 10-minute documentary or short film. Students will then do a Genre study on the Dystopian Genre, specifically looking at the concept of control via technology, we use modern texts to discuss how this concept is mirrored in Society.
Career opportunities: The media industry in New Zealand is diverse and growing rapidly. Studying Media Studies opens up various career paths, including journalism, advertising, filmmaking, broadcasting, public relations, and social media management. Early exposure to media concepts and tools can help students make informed decisions about their future careers.

Recommended Prior Learning
It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that students taking Level 3 Media Studies have had a successful year in Level 2 Media Studies. Students wishing to take Level 3 without taking Level 2 will be subject to a conversation with the Head of Department (RNE) with a specific focus on their English ability and creative subjects. Students need a strength in literacy-rich subjects and strong creative ability. Prior knowledge of content creation is preferred, and a passion for TV and Film is a must. This will have a practical element and students are expected to participate in both practical and written work.
